FAQ: Why Sublimation?

Sublimation is popular for Ice Hockey because of the durable nature of the dye and the process involved. Traditional methods for apparel have included screen printing, direct to garments, heat press printing, and vinyl cutting. However, these methods all have major problems.

Screen printing has color limitations and the coats of the ink are heavier on the fabric. Although it’s a popular method, it doesn’t allow for detailed design or low volume. It also cracks with time and may peel.

Direct to Garments (DTG) has many of the same issues as screen printing. The ink is printed directly onto the fabric. DTG allows for more colors than screen printing. However, the ink typically fades and can show greater pixelation of the image.

Heat Press Printing provides greater complexity than the previously mentioned methods. However, the dye used is typically transparent and so this method doesn’t work on dark fabrics. It is also limited to printing across the entire garment.

Vinyl Cutting involves cutting the design out of a soft fabric and then sewing it onto the garment. Although attractive in design, it is seldom used for any type of sports apparel because of the multiple layers of clothing and the limited font types and letters that can be used with it.

Sublimation Is Best for Ice Hockey Uniforms

Sublimation is the preferred method of dye application for sports apparel. There are many reasons for this. First, the dye is applied through a high-tech heat & pressure process that literally fuses the ink with the fibers of the fabric.

The ink becomes part of the fabric!

As a result, sublimation apparel does not crack. It does not peel. It does not create heavier or thicker garments. The ink and the design wear exactly the same as the garment because it is part of the garment down to the microscopic level.

Sublimation offers unlimited colors, vivid details, and high-quality design. The entire garment can be printed, which means that the possibilities are endless.

Plus, because of the way it’s made, sublimation can be easily applied to a single garment. There aren’t additional fees for colors or minimum batch requirements.
