What is Sublimation?

Sublimation is also called dye-sub or dye-sublimation printing. It is a versatile and digital printing method. Sublimation is a process that bonds ink to the fabric at a sub-surface level.

In sublimation, the dyes are printed vía a high qualify printer onto a transfer material, such as a specialized paper. Those dyes are then transferred to the fabric under heat and pressure that bonds the dyes to the fabric at a molecular level.

By applying heat and pressure to both the transfer medium and the fabric, the dyes are turned instantly from a solid to a gas. The gas bonds directly to the fabric and becomes part of its molecular structure.

This provides several advantages. First, the dyes are bonded to the fabric. Unlike screen printing and other printing methods, sublimation dyes don’t crack, peel, fade or wear differently than the fabric. The dyes have become a part of the fabric and so all wear and tear will happen as the actual garment wears. This makes sublimation ideal for heavy use. It also makes sublimation ideal for apparel that will go through a lot of physical stress and numerous washings in its lifetime.

Sublimation allows for an unlimited number of dyes and colors! You are not limited like you are with other processes! You also are not charged by the colors or the size of the order. We can do very small orders without a minimum requirement and without a “small order” charge!

You decide on the details. These details include things like the type of neck you’d like (v-neck, round, other) and on the type of fabric you’d like to use.

If you need sublimation for a large event or order, we can provide samples of product options. (Obviously- we cannot do a free sample for a single order)

Once we have the design and details approved, we send off one to our high-tech printer. Your uniforms are printed using sublimation, which means no color fading and no peeling. Ink is transferred using rollers that maintain a constant pressure and temperature. You won’t find lines or breaks in your apparel.

Can I Use Sublimation On Any Fabric or Material Type?

Sublimation for apparel bonds best with polymers and polyesters. It does not work as well on cotton, bamboo, and wool. It does work well on some blends, depending on the manufacturing process. Poly/Cotton blends often create a sublimation that looks more retro.

Generally, blends that are at least 50% polyester work well, but the remaining fibers must be able to withstand the heat of up to 400 degrees Fahrenheit.

Does Sublimation Work on Any Base Color of Fabric?

White garments are generally the preferred base for sublimation. That’s because sublimation uses open spaces for the while coloring in the garment. There are no dye combinations that produce a white color in sublimation.

However, other light colors can be used as a base. If you choose another base color, white will not be part of the color theme int he garment.

There is another factor to consider if you choose a base color that is different from a white fabric.

The heat used during sublimation can affect the dyes used in regular garment dyes. If the dye is set at a temperature lower than 400 degrees Fahrenheit, then that could affect the base dye. It could fade in open places where the dye was exposed to the heat rollers, but no sublimation ink was set.

Additionally, neon colors will fade because neon colors include chemicals (called brighteners) that were added to the color dye.
