History of the Alabama colors
Crimson and white were already Alabama's colors when the football program began. Alabama Athletics' uniform history describes the 1892 team wearing white with crimson stockings and crimson 'U. of A.' lettering. The early team was known as the 'Crimson White' or the 'Thin Red Line'. The university's traditions page says the 'Crimson Tide' name is usually traced to the 1907 game against Auburn in Birmingham, when red mud stained the white jerseys and sports editor Hugh Roberts of the Birmingham Age-Herald reportedly said the team played like 'a Crimson Tide.' No official university source found explains who chose crimson and white or when.
