History of the Arizona State colors

The ASU Alumni Association says gold has been the school's leading color since 1896. Gold was chosen for the promise, treasure and sunshine of the Arizona Territory. Maroon and white were added in 1898 as part of the football uniform. The ASU Library's list of university firsts gives 1910 for the colors maroon, old gold and white, so sources give different dates for when the full set became official. Sun Devil Athletics' 2011 rebrand set consistent shades of maroon and gold and added copper and black to the athletics palette. Copper was chosen for its place in Arizona's history.
