History of the Arizona colors

Arizona's first colors were sage green and silver. The sage stood for the desert sage bush and the silver for the territory's mining industry. In November 1900 a student newspaper editorial argued that sage and silver had outgrown their usefulness and did not work for pins, flags or varsity sweaters. In December 1900 a committee reviewed the question, and students adopted cardinal red and navy blue almost unanimously. Today the university calls these colors Arizona Red and Arizona Blue.
