History of the Auburn colors
Auburn's orange and blue date from its first football season in 1892. Coach George Petrie chose the burnt orange and navy blue worn by the teams at his alma mater, the University of Virginia. The best-known story, told by Auburn and by the student newspaper, says Allie Glenn sewed an orange 'A' on a navy sweater to show Petrie how the colors looked together before the first game against Georgia. Accounts differ, though: another version says Petrie picked the colors on the spot when a reporter asked for them. According to a university historian quoted in The Plainsman, the board of trustees did not formally adopt the colors until 1949, recording them as 'ultramarine' and 'golden orange.'

Auburn's brand guide notes that fabric and other merchandise should be matched to PMS 172 rather than the PMS 158 used in print. An official licensing sheet also lists Madeira embroidery threads: 1078 for orange and 1243 for blue.
