History of the Boston College colors
Boston College adopted maroon and gold as its school colors in the mid-1880s; the university historian's chronology dates the choice to 1885. According to BC Athletics, a student committee led by T.J. Hurley (class of 1885) looked at the colors of rival Jesuit colleges, including Holy Cross, Fordham and Georgetown, before picking maroon and gold, which BC describes as papal colors, and the student body approved the choice unanimously. The first banner in the new colors was sewn by students of the New England Conservatory of Music, which was then near BC's South End campus.
