History of the BYU colors

BYU has used white and blue since the 1890s. BYU Magazine traces the first blue to the 1891 commencement program, which explained that white stands for purity and blue for truth. The shade of blue has varied over the years. In 1999 athletics moved to a darker blue with tan accents, and in 2005 the football program kept that darker blue. In the current brand standards, navy is the dominant university color, white is its main companion, and royal is the secondary color, which BYU Athletics treats as a primary color.
