History of the Colorado State colors

Orange and green were the school's first colors: players for Colorado Agricultural College wore orange and green ribbons at its first football game in January 1893, and 1890s school publications tie the green to alfalfa and the orange to pumpkins. In 1909 President Charles A. Lory made green and gold the official colors, with the gold meant to represent harvested corn. The gold was applied inconsistently for decades, ranging from orange to bright yellow and a mustard yellow from 1958 to 1992, until coach Sonny Lubick moved football to metallic gold in 1993. Orange returned as an alternate athletics color in 2010, and the current brand palette keeps Aggie Orange alongside the primary green and gold as a nod to that heritage.
