History of the Georgetown colors
Georgetown's blue and gray date to 1876, when the newly founded Georgetown College Boat Club appointed a committee on colors to pick racing colors. The university library says the pairing honored students and alumni who had fought on both sides of the Civil War and expressed unity between the college's Northern and Southern students. Young women from the neighboring Visitation academy sewed a half-blue, half-gray banner for the crew, and the colors became a college tradition. The university's visual identity guidelines likewise describe 'Union blue' and 'Confederate gray' adopted after the war to signify the union of North and South.
