History of the Georgia Tech colors

Gold and white have identified Georgia Tech for roughly 135 years. The first reference to official Georgia Tech class colors appeared in the Atlanta Constitution in 1891 and listed white, blue and gold, and the first class ring in 1894 also used gold, white and blue. Early publications often printed the gold as yellow or goldenrod because metallic inks were hard to produce, while the metallic gold of the Ramblin' Wreck and football helmets became a lasting tradition. In 2018 the athletics department defined Tech Gold, based on the Ramblin' Wreck's paint, as its primary color alongside white, with navy as secondary; the Institute refined its own gold and navy in 2026.
