History of the Georgia colors

Red and black have been tied to Georgia athletics since the university's first football season in 1892, when the team's goat mascot wore a hat with red and black ribbons. Before the teams formally became the Bulldogs in 1920, they were most often called "the Red and Black." Silver entered the athletic look in 1939, when coach Wally Butts introduced the silver pants later celebrated as the "Silver Britches"; Vince Dooley switched to white pants in 1964 and brought silver back in 1980.
