History of the Marshall colors

Marshall's first football teams, starting in 1898, were known as the Blue and Black, but according to university commencement programs the green and white had been adopted by 1904. On January 5, 1965, more than 85 percent of students voted for the Thundering Herd name, the buffalo mascot and green and white as the official school colors. For a time the university's official green was a darker shade, but in 2010 athletics began a return to the traditional kelly green, and in 2015 the Board of Governors made kelly green (PMS 354) the official color. The university now describes its official colors as kelly green and white.
