History of the Mississippi State colors

Mississippi State's colors date to November 15, 1895, when the first Mississippi A&M football team was getting ready for a road game against Southern Baptist University in Jackson, Tennessee. The student body asked the team to pick official colors, and team captain W.M. Matthews chose maroon and white. In 1938 football coach Spike Nelson tried to switch to cardinal and gold uniforms, but neither the uniforms nor Nelson lasted past that first game.
