History of the Navy colors
Navy athletics says the Class of 1890 was the first to use navy blue and gold, at a time when each class had its own colors. The Academy adopted them as its colors in 1892, after a meeting of the Naval Academy Auxiliary Athletic Association reported a favorable conference with the naval cadets. The Academy seal, approved in 1899, also uses gold on a blue field. The colors are celebrated in the alma mater 'Navy Blue and Gold', written in 1923 and sung after every home athletic event.
