History of the Notre Dame colors
According to Notre Dame athletics, the school's original colors at its 1842 founding were yellow and blue, with yellow standing for light and blue for truth; gold and blue became the official colors after the Golden Dome and the statue of Mary atop the Main Building were gilded. A history hosted on a Notre Dame server cites an 1891 reference to "yellow and blue" college colors and an 1896 account of blue-and-gold ribbons, and notes that blue and gold have been described as colors of the Virgin Mary, the university's namesake. Accounts of the symbolism differ: the same history also records a claim that founder Rev. Edward Sorin chose blue and gold as the royal colors of his patron saint, King Edward the Confessor. Green is a long-standing spirit color, worn by the football team on and off since the Knute Rockne era and notably from 1977.
