History of the Oklahoma State colors

Oklahoma State's orange and black date to the late 1890s; the university's timeline places the choice in 1899. According to the university, the choice honored a popular faculty member whose father was a Princeton graduate, and students adopted Princeton's orange and black. The Princeton connection also showed up in the early 1900s, when some of the school's athletic teams were called the Tigers.
