University of Pittsburgh School Colors
University of Pittsburgh's school colors are Pitt Royal Blue (#003594) and Pitt Gold (#FFB81C). Pitt's brand standards define 15 colors in all; every official HEX, RGB, CMYK and Pantone value is listed below, along with the story of how the colors were chosen.
History of the Pitt colors
Blue and gold have long been Pitt's colors; the university's own history notes that the panther was chosen as mascot in 1909 partly because its coat resembled the gold in Pitt's "blue and old gold." In recent decades athletics used navy blue and gold, which the athletic department said looked too similar to rivals such as Notre Dame and Georgia Tech. In April 2019 Pitt returned to royal blue and bright gold, a reinterpretation of the colors introduced under football coach Johnny Majors in the 1970s and worn by the 1976 national championship team. The university brand now names Pitt Royal and Pitt Gold as its primary colors.
