History of the Seton Hall colors

Seton Hall's University Archives says the white and blue were adopted in the nineteenth century and were likely inspired by the family crest of founder Bishop James Roosevelt Bayley, which shows white stars on a blue field; the archives also link blue to the Virgin Mary and white to purity and light. The colors were so closely identified with the school that, according to the athletics department, its teams were known simply as the 'White & Blue' for roughly three decades after about 1900, and the yearbook was first titled the 'White and Blue.' After a come-from-behind baseball win at Holy Cross on April 24, 1931, a sportswriter called the team 'a gang of Pirates,' and the new nickname became tied to the blue and white. The university flag, unveiled in 2005, also shows blue and white, since the silver waves taken from the Archdiocese of Newark's arms become white on a flag.
