History of the St. John's colors

St. John's athletics department traces the university's long association with red to the 1920s, when a reporter called the football team the 'Redmen' after it took the field in all-red uniforms; the department says the name came from the color, not from any Native American reference. As the name later came to be read as Native American imagery, St. John's changed the nickname in 1994 to Red Storm, chosen to keep the red tradition while giving the teams a distinct identity. The university's current brand guidelines name red as the color to be used most prominently in all communications. No official page found states when red and white were formally adopted.
