History of the Texas colors

Orange and white were first used in 1885. The Board of Regents had students, faculty and alumni vote on the colors in 1900, and orange and white won 562 of the 1,111 votes cast. In 1928 track coach Clyde Littlefield had a darker, fade-resistant shade made for team uniforms, and it became known as burnt orange or Texas orange. Accounts say the expensive dyes for that shade became hard to get during World War II, so the teams went back to a brighter orange, which the regents made official in 1950. After coach Darrell Royal brought burnt orange back in the 1960s, the regents adopted it as the official color in 1967.
