History of the UCLA colors

UCLA uses blue and gold, the same pair as the University of California, and the university says the colors evoke the sea and sky and the sun and wildflowers, especially the California poppy. The exact shade of blue has changed many times, ranging from powder to sky to royal. A UCLA-run conference center credits football coach Red Sanders with choosing powder blue uniforms in 1949, while a 2003 Daily Bruin report says the football team moved to royal blue in the 1980s. In 2002 and 2003 UCLA Athletics introduced a darker 'True Blue' worn by all of its varsity teams.
