History of the USF colors
USF was established in 1956. According to a 2026 USF News article on the university's visual identity, Grace Allen, wife of founding President John Allen, said green and gold were selected because they were workable and no other Florida university had adopted them as official colors. The university's brand guide describes green, gold and white as a traditional representation of South Florida.
