History of the UVA colors

Before 1888, Virginia's athletic teams wore cardinal red and silver gray, colors that did not show up well on muddy football fields, so students pushed for a change. At a mass student meeting in 1888, Allen Potts, a member of the first Virginia football team, brought a navy-and-orange scarf from a summer of boating at Oxford University; when it was held up to the crowd, the students voted to adopt those colors. Orange and blue have been the university's colors ever since.
