History of the West Virginia colors
West Virginia University students adopted old gold and blue as the school colors in 1890. According to university tradition, the idea came from the West Virginia state seal and from the first verse of "Hail, West Virginia," though the university presents this as legend, not documented fact. Today the university's licensing standards ask that the colors be called simply Gold and Blue.
