History of the Butler colors
Butler's teams were called the Christians until 1919, when a Butler Collegian cartoon of a fraternity bulldog named Shimmy gave them the Bulldogs name. The university's published sources reviewed here do not say when or why blue and white were chosen. The athletics licensing office identifies official Butler Blue as Pantone 2767 and limits the Butler logo to black, white or that blue. The 2026 brand standards say the palette draws on the university's heritage and that Butler Blue should stay the dominant color.
