History of the Florida State colors

Florida State's garnet and gold go back to the Florida State College football teams of 1904 and 1905, which wore purple and gold. When the school became a women's college in 1905 and football moved to the University of Florida, students chose crimson as the color for 1905. That crimson was later combined with the football teams' purple to make garnet. FSU Libraries describes the same combination as the class color of 1905 (red) together with the football team's purple and gold. According to FSU Athletics, garnet and gold first appeared on an FSU football uniform on October 18, 1947, in a 14-6 loss to Stetson.
