History of the Maryland colors

Maryland's four official colors, red, white, black and gold, come from the Maryland state flag, which carries the arms of George Calvert, first Lord Baltimore: the black and gold of the Calvert family and the red and white of the Crossland family. According to Maryland Athletics, early uniforms were gray or maroon and gray, and each graduating class often picked its own colors. Black and gold took over in the early 1920s and stayed dominant until 1942, when football coach Clark Shaughnessy switched the team to red and white. All four colors now appear on Terps uniforms, and the university uses red most prominently.
