History of the UNLV colors

UNLV Athletics traces scarlet and gray to the late 1950s, when the young school, then Nevada Southern, took the Rebels name and a mascot called Beauregard, a cartoon wolf in a Confederate uniform. The Rebels name and wolf were meant to rebel against the University of Nevada in Reno and its Wolf Pack, and the athletics department notes that scarlet and gray were traditional Confederate colors. After objections from African-American student-athletes in the early 1970s, the student senate banished Beauregard in 1976, but the colors and the Rebels nickname were kept. The university now describes scarlet in terms of passion, action and rebellion.
