Choosing a shade of blue

Blue is the biggest color family in team, school and work apparel. Navy alone is the most common uniform color after black, royal blue is one of the most common team colors, and the light blues cover everything from Carolina blue game days to spring events. The shades are used very differently, so start with the shade, then pick the garment.

Navy Blue (3,377 styles)

Navy blue is the darkest blue, just short of black. Suppliers sell it as Navy, True Navy, Classic Navy, Dark Navy, Midnight Navy and more; under good light it reads clearly blue, which is what separates it from charcoal and black. Dark blue is widely read as trustworthy, dependable and authoritative, which is a big part of why it dominates work and team wear.

Royal Blue (1,847 styles)

Royal blue is the bright, saturated middle blue: clearly brighter than navy, without the turquoise cast of sapphire. Suppliers sell it as Royal, True Royal, Deep Royal and Cobalt. Bright blue reads as confident and energetic while still feeling dependable, which makes it a safe spirited color for teams and events.

Carolina Blue (474 styles)

Carolina blue is the medium light blue made famous by the University of North Carolina. Suppliers also sell it as Columbia Blue, Sky Blue and Ceil Blue. Light blues read as calm, friendly and approachable rather than formal.

Light Blue (353 styles)

Light blue is the palest blue we list: baby blue, powder blue, ice blue and chambray. It's lighter and softer than Carolina blue. Pale blue reads as calm, gentle and clean.

Sapphire Blue (201 styles)

Sapphire blue is the vivid blue that leans slightly toward turquoise, between royal blue and Carolina blue. Suppliers sell it as Sapphire, Electric Blue, Pacific Blue and French Blue. Sapphire reads as fresh, sporty and energetic.

What blue says on clothing

Blue regularly tops surveys of people's favorite colors, and it's widely read as trustworthy, calm and dependable. That's why it dominates uniforms: dark blue signals reliability and authority, bright blue reads as confident and energetic, and light blue as friendly and relaxed.

Blue school colors

More schools wear blue than any other color. Navy is the classic: Michigan, Notre Dame, Penn State, Virginia and Auburn all use a navy blue. Royal blue is the other big group, led by Kentucky, Duke and Kansas, and North Carolina gave Carolina blue its name.

Official color codes: University of Michigan school colors, University of Notre Dame school colors, Pennsylvania State University school colors, University of Virginia school colors, University of Kentucky school colors, Duke University school colors, University of Kansas school colors, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill school colors and University of California, Los Angeles school colors.
