Choosing a shade of red

Red is one of the most common team colors there is, and it splits cleanly into three groups: bright red and scarlet, the darker cardinal and crimson reds, and deep maroon and burgundy. Schools are particular about which one they wear, so pick the shade first, then the garment.

Bright Red (1,568 styles)

Bright red is the true red family: Red, True Red, Scarlet, Deep Red, Cherry and Sport Red. It's clearly brighter than cardinal and has none of the brown of maroon. Bright red reads as energetic, bold and competitive. It's the color people notice first in a crowd, which is exactly why teams and events use it.

Cardinal Red (210 styles)

Cardinal red is the darker, slightly blue-leaning red between bright red and maroon. Suppliers sell it as Cardinal, Crimson, Garnet and Cranberry. Darker reds read as rich, traditional and confident: still bold, but less loud than bright red.

Maroon (758 styles)

Maroon is the deepest red, close to brown. Suppliers sell it as Maroon, Burgundy, Wine, Sangria and Merlot; on fabric, maroon and burgundy are nearly the same color, so both are on this page. Maroon reads as serious, established and warm. It keeps some of red's energy but looks more grown-up and understated.

What red says on clothing

Red is the most attention-grabbing color in clothing. It's widely associated with energy, passion, strength and urgency, which is why teams love it and why it's used sparingly on office uniforms. The darker the red, the more it shifts from loud and energetic toward rich, traditional and serious.

Red school colors

Red is everywhere in college sports. Ohio State's scarlet, Georgia's Bulldog Red and Alabama's crimson sit in our bright red range; Florida State's garnet, Virginia Tech's Chicago maroon and Oklahoma's crimson fall in cardinal red; and Mississippi State and Texas A&M wear maroon.
